The Prevalence in India of Gastric and Duodenal Ulcer and Allied Conditions of the Upper Abdomen with Some Observations of the Diagnosis and Treatment

The diagnosis of chronic abdominal diseases is, in the case of many Indian village patients, beset with difficulties not obtaining in Western countries. This is due to the prevailing high percentage of illiteracy and the consequent lack of power of observation on the part of ignorant patients, making history-taking at times very unsatisfactory. This condition of things is intensified to a certain extent by the unavailability of up-to-date methods of diagnosis. This is most obvious in the rural districts remote from the large cities. It is gratifying, however, to
